I was nervous all day just thinking about the concert. Before the concert in Montreal was announced, I was planning to go to Ottawa (3 hours from where I live) or Toronto (7 hours from where I live) to see her live… but I guess she heard me and decided to come here in Montreal. It is a lot easier for me, since it is only 40 minutes away from my home. My mom decided to buy me tickets, since my birthday is on April 14th, but she didn't want to give them to me before Friday at 17:45! (You know, mothers sometimes…) So, I arrived to "La Place des Arts" at 19:00. We were very lucky because we got a place for the car just in fronts the entrance! You know, it is very hard to find a place for the car in Montreal, so when I say that I've been lucky, it is true! Also, the weather was really, really bad… snow, snow, snow… Poor Charlotte! I told her in the guestbook that the weather was not as cold as it was. It was true when I told her that because the weather was like 10 degrees Celsius, but yesterday it was around -5 degrees. No, Charlotte, I'm not a liar!!! (hehe)
We had to wait until 19:45 before we could enter into the concert hall and sit. It started around 20:05 with Charlotte telling us some French: "Salut tout le monde", "Je suis très contente d'être à Montréal". (Hello everybody, I'm very happy to be in Montreal) Then she said "That's all… it was my French for tonight" After, she told us that she would sings right after Jesse Cook, a very good guitarist. It was really cool. He plays guitar like you couldn't imagine! He was accompanied with 2 other men and he told us that they were around 100 years old older than Charlotte Church! (all their ages put together) It was so funny… He told us of he was touched by Charlotte's invitation to take part to her concert. I think he played around 7 songs.
When he finished, we all thought it was going to be Charlotte, but… no, it was the orchestra! (Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal) They were so good, but I could wait anymore to hear Charlotte! (hehe)
Then she came… wearing black pants and a silver T-shirt. She presented the orchestra, called them the "Fab" orchestra, (everybody laughed) and said that it was the first concert of her tour and that everything was improvised "I'll just keep going on" she said. She started the show with a very wonderful song "Tonight". It seems that this song has been written for her! Right after that, she told us that she was going to sing her grandmother's favorite song: "My grand-mother told me that she really wants me to sing her favorite song during my tour in America". This song is "If I loved you". It was also very wonderful, as you can guess! Then, she said that she is always singing the next song at every concert and many TV shows… she said that even if she gives a very huge list of songs, people always ask her to sing this song. She also said that it was the first song she sang so it is still special. Can you guess what it was? Yes! "Pie Jesu". After the song she left the stage for a 20 minute break.
When Charlotte returned she was wearing an "Irish fairy tale" dress, as she called it. The dress was wonderful. Before the first song, two young girls went to give her flowers on the stage and Charlotte took the time to take a picture with them. She is so sweet! She started this part of the show with "La Pastorella". Before she started to sing the song, she explained what this song is about… I didn't get all she said, because I'm a French speaker, but also because she speaks very rapidly! She continued with, what I think is the most wonderful song she ever sang: "Bridge over troubled water". As I just said it was FABULOUS! She also brought her harpist from Wales with her, for a welsh tune. She said: "You will probably not understand anything, but this is a good thing because I'll probably get all the pronunciation wrong!" (everybody laughed) Then she said that her dress fits with the next song, a gothic Irish song called "My Lagan Love". I simply love this song… and with Charlotte singing it, that was even better! After, she left the stage again, for about 5 minutes (probably to get changed) and the orchestra played two songs.
When she came back, she was wearing a very wonderful long red skirt with a golden top. She looked very great in that dress. It was the most wonderful of the evening. Then, she sang a French song, a new one as she said, so I don't know the title. Of course I didn't understand everything (even if I'm a French speaker) because of her accent, but she did great! After the song, she apologized… she said that it was a new song and plus that it was in French (she even had her notes on stage with her to help her with the pronunciation). She thanked us because we clapped after the song! Charlotte, remember this: Not matter what you sing, we will always clap after a song because you're always so great! She continued with the song "A bit of earth", a very beautiful song. She said that this one is her very, very favorite… as she said for many songs! After she sang the song "Dream a Dream" and said: "I'm sorry but Billy Gilman is not here with me tonight… he's in Nashville somewhere!" (everybody laughed again). This song is one of my favorites and she doesn't disappoint me. Her voice was even much beautiful then it is on the CD. Can you imagine? She ended the show (as she said) with "Bali-Hai" (sorry if the pronunciation is wrong). What a song! Or I should say: What a singer! It was really wonderful. Then she left the stage again… but she rapidly came back because everybody was clapping and standing.
She said: "Since you stood for me, I'll sing an other one with Jesse Cook. It is call Summertime". I was sure that they were going to do this song together… and it was really cool. Her singing with his guitar, created something really interesting. Then, she thanks us for being there and also for our shopping centers! She bought so much things that her mother had to stop her! She said: "I'm a 15 years old teenager, so, it has to be done!". She also said that she loves Montreal and all the huge shopping centers, and that she will come back as soon as possible. But it wasn't enough… people wanted more. So, everybody stood again…
She had no choice, she came back for another song, saying: "This is really the last song! I do this because you are so sweet and because you have wonderful shopping centers!" (everybody laughed) She sang another Irish song, "Danny Boy". This really was the end.
I was so impressed. I have all her CDs and stuff, but it is a very different thing to see her in concert! She is such an amazing performer. Charlotte, keep going, you're the best.
After the concert, I went to the stage door to have the chance to see her, but there were two people that asked me: "Can we help you?" I said, "I would like to know if she is going to sign autograph and take pictures"" One of the guys told me: "No, she is in tour and she doesn't want to sign autograph at all." I don't know if it was true (I guess no), but I had to leave the place… this is too bad. I really wanted to take some pictures! But I thought that it was maybe due to the very bad weather… who knows!
I didn't get the chance to Charlotte after the concert but I had such a wonderful evening anyways. You can be sure that if she comes back in Montreal, I'll be there! - Kate
