Charlotte Sets Sights
On Harry Potter Film

HAVING already
conquered the music charts, 13-year-old Welsh singer Charlotte
Church has her sights on a starring role in a Hollywood blockbuster.
The Cardiff
soprano, who has already sold 2.5 million albums worldwide since the
launch of her first record a year ago, would like to play one of the
main roles in a planned movie based on the best-selling Harry Potter
books.
“I read the
Harry Potter books by J K Rowling and I was amazed by them and I
can’t wait for her to bring out the next one.
“I would like
to play the girl in the books called Hermione. Apparently Steven
Spielberg is going to be making a film of that and I want to play
the girl in it. It’s because I love them so much. They are
fantastic, I have been badgering all my friends at school to read
them and my mum and my dad as well.”
The top-selling
books about teenage investigator Harry Potter have become popular
with children and adults alike and it would seem only a matter of
time before they are translated to the big screen. Oscar-winning
director Steven Spielberg has been tipped to film them.
In the meantime
Charlotte has appeared in an episode of ITV drama Heartbeat, to
be screened on December 19, and in an American show called Touched
By An Angel.
Yesterday she
was again the star of the show as she opened the first Sony MiniDisc
Music Store in London’s West End.
Arriving in a
customised black and white Mini car, Charlotte cut the banner across
the front of the shop to reveal television screens showing videos of
her concert performances and her Internet website.
She flew in
from Europe where she is on a tour to promote her new album, Charlotte
Church.
Despite
worldwide fame, she revealed that her celebrity status has had
little effect on fellow pupils at Howell’s School in Cardiff.
“My friends
think it is fantastic because I get to give them free CDs and
backstage passes and they get to meet their favourite pop stars and
sometimes they come with me,” she said.
“They say to
me, ‘Stay famous, keep it all coming!’”
She said she
had experienced no jealousy from youngsters at the school.
“There have
been rumours, but it doesn’t bother me because my close friends
have always stuck by me, and I know they are not false friends
because I have known them for a long time.”
Charlotte said
she would like to hold a New Year’s Eve party in the Millennium
Stadium.
“I would take
my whole school, which is about 500 people. I’d like Tom Jones,
Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers, Catatonia, me, Will Smith,
Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez to perform and then me and my
schoolmates could all dance on the pitch.”
After opening
the store Charlotte was presented with a platinum album in
recognition of her worldwide record sales success.
